It's Saturday, Girls. While you're out doing things, hopefully with your family, don't forget the Lord and His goodness!

Today in Joshua 6, God gave Joshua very specific instructions, Joshua and the people followed them to the letter, and it worked! The walls of Jericho fell down and they took the city. "Took the city" actually sounds very tame and civilized. What they really did is rushed into the city through the fallen walls and slaughtered everything that breathed, with the exception of Rahab and the people in her house. Anything made of precious metal went to the Lord's tabernacle, and everything else was burned. It was a good thing Rahab had faith in God, or she and her family would have been killed too.

In Psalm 13, David was feeling like the Lord had forsaken him, but at the end of the psalm we find that he was still trusting in the Lord. A good lesson for us.

In Psalm 14, David was lamenting over all the fools that were in his land. We certainly have a lot of fools in our land today! Read this chapter for a good description.

Psalm 15 was more uplifting. This is a picture of who will actually get to live with God in His kingdom. This tells us exactly what we should be doing if we want God to be pleased with us.

Proverbs 14 is another treasure-trove of goodies. There are several verses in there about holding our tempers. Read it and see what else you find!

Very interesting reading today, Ladies! By the way, did you know that in this blog, wherever you see a scripture reference that looks highlighted, it's actually a link? You can click it, and you will be redirected to Biblegateway.com where you can read that reference. It's pretty handy if you want to read but don't have a Bible with you.

Pretty painful stuff happening today in Joshua 5. Joshua and the Israelites are in Canaan now; the surrounding kings have heard about the river crossing and are afraid to mess with them, because they have God with them. Not just a god, but THE REAL, LIVING GOD. Now it's time to catch up on things, and all the men and boys have to be circumcised. Clear back to Abraham, this was God's way of separating his people unto Himself, and showing them to be different from everyone else. While they were wandering around in the wilderness for 40 years, all the circumcised men died off, and the people born during that time weren't circumcised. They got that done, and were all staying around the camp healing up.
At the end of the chapter, Joshua sees a man with a sword coming, so he goes out and asks if he's friend or foe. He's an angel, the Captain of the Lord's Host! Can you imagine? He must have been awe inspiring. Definitely not the sweet little angel depicted in the painting of the kids on the bridge with their guardian angel! Joshua, tough old warrior that he was, dropped to his knees and called himself a servant.

Psalms 10, Psalm 11, and Psalm 12 were short today. They give a good description of evil people and offer a prayer for deliverance from the wicked. We can see how the deeds of the wicked haven't changed much over the centuries.

Notice this in Psalm 11:5 - The LORD trieth the righteous: but the wicked and him that loveth violence his soul hateth.

Does it say, His soul hateth violence? No. It doesn't. Look at that verse carefully. It says, "The wicked and him...", the Lord's soul hateth. Those are people, not just acts. Don't let anybody tell you the Lord loves everybody in the whole world. There are more references than this one that prove that there are actual PEOPLE that God hates.

Proverbs 13 is a wealth of good instruction. In verses 2 & 3 we see more about watching our mouth. Verse 4 has an admonition against lying. Verses 7 & 8 talk about how rich people can have all those things, but still have nothing. Verses 13 & 14 tell us why we should love God's word. And much more! Read it and see what you find.

I got caught up in stuff yesterday and did not do my reading. Shame on me! Back on track today!

Starting out in Joshua 3 & 4. What a great account! The Lord tells Joshua that He is going to start magnifying him, so the people will know God is with him, like they knew about Moses. Good thing for Joshua! What a job to lead such a large unruly group of people!
They have finally reached their destination: the land of Canaan. They have to cross the Jordan river, though, to get in, and the river is in its annual flood stage. God tells Joshua to have the priests carry the Ark of the Covenant into the river. When they do, the water splits, and all the water coming from upstream piles up in a heap! The priests stand in the middle on dry ground until all the people pass over, then the priests come out of the river, and as soon as they are out of reach, Whoosh, the river goes back to normal! Praise God! I love this story because scientists have gone to so much effort to say that when Moses led the people across the Red Sea the water didn't split and pile up like they show in the movie The Ten Commandments. They say it was really the Reed Sea and Pharaoh's army just got stuck in a lot of mud! Well, they can't disprove this one in Joshua, because it says plain as day that the water stood up in a heap! Take that, scientists!
After that they set up a memorial. Why? Chapter 4, verse 24: That all the people of the earth might know the hand of the LORD, that it is mighty: that ye might fear the LORD your God for ever.

In Psalm 7, David talks about how wicked his enemies are, but how God will protect him.

Psalm 8 is a psalm of praise, showing how the wonders of Creation all glorify their Maker.

Psalm 9 is another psalm of praise, showing God's strength and His mercy.

Proverbs 11 is full of good advice. Verses 12, 13, 16, 19, and 22 stand out to me, particularly today.

In Proverbs 12, we see more exhortation about our speech, and also some warnings about laziness (among plenty of other good stuff!)

Good reading today, Ladies! I started in Joshua 2, where Joshua sent out the spies to scope out Jericho. They were found out and hid at Rahab's house. She helped them escape but the most important part is why she did it. She believed that our God is the only true God. We'll see the results of that when we get to chapter 6!

The Psalms were good today, too. Psalm 4 told me to be still, to be at peace, and trust in my God. Psalm 5 showed me God's treatment of the righteous contrasted with His treatment of the wicked. Psalm 6 reminded me of His mercies.

In Proverbs 10, I noticed many lessons pertaining to our speech. How the speech, the words, and the tongue of the righteous and the just differ from those of the wicked and the foolish. Good instruction for anyone, anytime!

This morning I read Joshua 1, where the Lord reminded me that we are to be courageous, because we have Him looking out for us.

Then I read Psalm 1, 2 & 3 where the Lord reminded me that if we serve Him faithfully, He'll make sure we have everything we need. He also reminded me that He is our defender and also what He'll do to our enemies.

I finished up with Proverbs 9, which talks about dealing with scorners and also about foolish, adulterous women.

Very interesting reading today. It's nice how the Lord gives us what we need, just when we need it, and continuously teaches us.

My Favorite Chapter

I imagine everyone has a favorite chapter or favorite scripture passage. Mine is Isaiah 54. This chapter is comforting to me; it overwhelms me and brings me to tears, to realize the tenderness and compassion the Creator of the Universe has for each of us individually. Our God truly is Great!

1 ¶ Sing, O barren, thou that didst not bear; break forth into singing, and cry aloud, thou that didst not travail with child: for more are the children of the desolate than the children of the married wife, saith the LORD.
2 Enlarge the place of thy tent, and let them stretch forth the curtains of thine habitations: spare not, lengthen thy cords, and strengthen thy stakes;
3 For thou shalt break forth on the right hand and on the left; and thy seed shall inherit the Gentiles, and make the desolate cities to be inhabited.
4 Fear not; for thou shalt not be ashamed: neither be thou confounded; for thou shalt not be put to shame: for thou shalt forget the shame of thy youth, and shalt not remember the reproach of thy widowhood any more.
5 For thy Maker is thine husband; the LORD of hosts is his name; and thy Redeemer the Holy One of Israel; The God of the whole earth shall he be called.
6 ¶ For the LORD hath called thee as a woman forsaken and grieved in spirit, and a wife of youth, when thou wast refused, saith thy God.
7 For a small moment have I forsaken thee; but with great mercies will I gather thee.

Thought for the Day

I'm sure you've noticed how the price of just about everything has gone up lately. Gas, food, you name it; we're paying more for it. I don't know of anyone whose pay has been increased accordingly, do you? We're all having to tighten up and watch our spending even more than usual.

It's very easy to get caught up in worrying about where the money is going to come from to meet your obligations and still put food on the table. But you know what? Our God is faithful! Look at these Scriptures:

But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:19

I have been young, and now am old; yet have I not seen the righteous forsaken, nor his seed begging bread. Psalm 37:25

And why take ye thought for raiment? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin: And yet I say unto you, That even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. Wherefore, if God so clothe the grass of the field, which to day is, and to morrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much more clothe you, O ye of little faith? Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed? (For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things. But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you. Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof. Matthew 6:28-34

When you feel yourself starting to worry about the bills and buying groceries and keeping the kids in clothes, read these verses again, and take comfort. Our God is good and He will always take care of us! Praise His Holy Name!

Thought for the Day

And he [Jesus] said, A certain man had two sons: And the younger of them said to his father, Father, give me the portion of goods that falleth to me. And he divided unto them his living. And not many days after the younger son gathered all together, and took his journey into a far country, and there wasted his substance with riotous living. And when he had spent all, there arose a mighty famine in that land; and he began to be in want. And he went and joined himself to a citizen of that country; and he sent him into his fields to feed swine. And he would fain have filled his belly with the husks that the swine did eat: and no man gave unto him. And when he came to himself, he said, How many hired servants of my father's have bread enough and to spare, and I perish with hunger! I will arise and go to my father, and will say unto him, Father, I have sinned against heaven, and before thee, And am no more worthy to be called thy son: make me as one of thy hired servants. And he arose, and came to his father. But when he was yet a great way off, his father saw him, and had compassion, and ran, and fell on his neck, and kissed him. And the son said unto him, Father, I have sinned against heaven, and in thy sight, and am no more worthy to be called thy son. But the father said to his servants, Bring forth the best robe, and put it on him; and put a ring on his hand, and shoes on his feet: And bring hither the fatted calf, and kill it; and let us eat, and be merry: Luke 15:11-23

You've probably heard or read this story many times. Many people use this story to say that no matter how far away from God you go, and how far into sin you slide, you will still always be God's child. In essence, they are saying that no matter what awful thing you do, you can't lose your salvation. There are, however, too many scriptures that say otherwise.

Don't believe that? Look at the next verse:

For this my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found. And they began to be merry. Verse 24.

As far as the father was concerned, his son was DEAD! Not just gone away for a while, but dead. He had ceased to exist. The father was ecstatic to receive him back when he repented of his sin and turned back to the right way, but while he was gone into sin, he was dead to his father. In verse 20, it does say that his father saw him a long way off and ran to him, but it doesn't say that his father was nervously pacing back and forth, spending hours staring up the road to see if he was coming.

Likewise, if we turn from our Father in Heaven and go back into sin, we will be dead in His sight. But, if we turn away from sin (repent) and come back to Him begging forgiveness, He will welcome us back. So, we should not ever think that backsliding and being "just a prodigal" is no big deal. It is a huge deal!

Thought for the Day

Have you ever heard people telling about how something happened and it made them so mad they just wanted to spit? And then they say, I feel so guilty for getting angry. Why? Is it a sin?

Let's look. First, we know and agree that God cannot commit sin. It just can't happen. That's another lesson. Use a Bible computer program or a concordance and see how many references you find to God's anger or the anger of the Lord. The Old Testament is chock full of references to God getting angry. So, getting angry is obviously not sinful. When evil is being committed we should get angry. How can anyone resist evil if it doesn't make them angry first? Since we are made in the image of God, and have some of the same emotions He does (that's where we got them from), we are going to get angry on occasion.

What makes us angry, and what we do with that anger are another story.

He that is slow to anger is better than the mighty; and he that ruleth his spirit than he that taketh a city. Proverbs 16:32

Be not hasty in thy spirit to be angry: for anger resteth in the bosom of fools. Ecclesiastes 7:9

We don't want to be in the position where every little thing sets us off. It is better to be in control of our spirit and not quick to be angry. And once we get angry, we have to get over it in a reasonable amount of time. Don't let it rest in your heart, or you will be a fool!

In the New Testament, Paul said these things:

Be ye angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath: Ephesians 4:26.

Paul the Apostle said, "Be angry!" Just don't let it make you commit sin!

Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice: Ephesians 4:31

But now ye also put off all these; anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth. Colossians 3:8

When we get angry, we have to put it off, not carry it around with us for days and weeks, becoming hateful and bitter. We can't let that anger cause us to commit sins, either.

So, the next time you find yourself getting angry, be careful in how you react, and then turn it over to the Lord as soon as you can. But remember, God Almighty Himself gets angry, too.

I woke up some time during the night, and these verses came to mind while I was trying to go back to sleep.


Bless the LORD, O my soul: and all that is within me, bless his holy name. Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits: Who forgiveth all thine iniquities; who healeth all thy diseases; Who redeemeth thy life from destruction; who crowneth thee with lovingkindness and tender mercies; Who satisfieth thy mouth with good things; so that thy youth is renewed like the eagle’s.
Psalm 103:1-5


Isn't that wonderful? Look how the Lord has blessed us; how can we do anything but bless Him back?

Thought for the Day

Matthew 25:14-30 is a parable Jesus told about the Kingdom of Heaven. You are probably familiar with the story, in which a man who was going on a journey entrusted his money to his servants, according to their abilities. When he came back, they came before him to show him how much return there was on his investment. The one who received most made the most (how it usually goes in investing), and it went on down to the servant who didn't receive much, but who was too afraid of the risk to invest. He was so afraid of losing his master's money that he buried it and gave it back to him upon his return. His master called him unprofitable because he didn't put it to use and make something of it. His little bit of money was taken from him and given to the one with the most, and the servant was tossed out into outer darkness.

Reading the story, it's pretty obvious it was dealing with money. However, God gives us other things besides money, and He expects us to use them for His glory and honor. Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning. Of his own will begat he us with the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures. James 1:17-18. Anything good that we have, any talents or gifts or abilities, were given to us by God.

Did He give us these for our own glory? N-O! Love, or charity, is one of the Fruit of the Spirit, and charity "seeketh not her own" (I Cor. 13:5). Even though money was used in the story in Matthew, the principles apply to anything the Lord has given us. Ever heard the term "Use it or lose it"? Well, there it is. If we don't use what we have to do the Lord's work, by blessing and helping others and bringing glory to the Lord's name, he will do just like the man did in the story and take our gift and give it to someone who will use it. And then, worst of all, He will toss us out of His presence and call us unprofitable.

What are your talents, gifts, or abilities? Can you cook, clean, or sew? Has God blessed you with more money than you need? Do you have compassion for those in need? Are you able to lend an ear and a shoulder to someone who needs a good cry? Let us each assess what we've been given. Dear Lord, please help us to use what You've given us for Your glory and for the furtherance of Your Kingdom. In Jesus Name, Amen!

Thought for the Day

I read an article this morning, in World magazine, about a couple who left their multi-million dollar careers in America to run a hospital in Ethiopia for people with deformities needing reconstructive surgery. It was moving to read how the man told each patient, or their parents, "Jesus brought me, brought us, here for you (or him, or her)."

Most of us don't have specialized medical training or other skills that would allow us to do huge things for other people. But, we all have something we CAN do to help someone and to glorify the Lord Jesus.

If any man speak, let him speak as the oracles of God; if any man minister, let him do it as of the ability which God giveth: that God in all things may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom be praise and dominion for ever and ever. Amen. I Peter 4:11.

While we may not, as ladies, be speakers in the church, we do speak to other ladies, and to our children. We can say what God would say, by speaking from the Bible and sharing Godly wisdom. And we can all minister. This doesn't necessarily mean 'being a minister'. It means helping, offering aid and comfort, and it can also mean teaching.

What abilities has God given you? You don't have to be a professional at them, just willing to use them. Let's make it a point to use our God-given abilities to glorify God through Jesus, and to be a blessing to those around us.

For ye shall go out with joy, and be led forth with peace: the mountains and the hills shall break forth before you into singing, and all the trees of the field shall clap their hands. Isaiah 55:12

Thou visitest the earth, and waterest it: thou greatly enrichest it with the river of God, which is full of water: thou preparest them corn, when thou hast so provided for it. Thou waterest the ridges thereof abundantly: thou settlest the furrows thereof: thou makest it soft with showers: thou blessest the springing thereof. Thou crownest the year with thy goodness; and thy paths drop fatness. They drop upon the pastures of the wilderness: and the little hills rejoice on every side. The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork.

Oh that men would praise the LORD for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men! Psalm 107:8

Thought for the Day

What does it mean to be sober? There are several definitions. One of the most obvious is "Not drunk" (in a nutshell). The others can be pretty much summed up in this: "Being calm, quiet, serious; not loud or showy; not drawing attention to oneself".

In I Peter 3, Peter was addressing the wives, and instructing them in how to behave and dress. Look at verse 4: "But let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price." If we have a meek and quiet spirit, that is part of being sober.

Being sober, or sobriety, does not mean that we have to go around with a long face, looking depressed all the time, though.

A merry heart maketh a cheerful countenance: but by sorrow of the heart the spirit is broken. Proverbs 15:3

Thought for the Day

"And one of the scribes came, and having heard them reasoning together, and perceiving that he had answered them well, asked him, Which is the first commandment of all? And Jesus answered him, The first of all the commandments is, Hear, O Israel; The Lord our God is one Lord: And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment. And the second is like, namely this, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. There is none other commandment greater than these." Matthew 12:28-31

I recently heard a wise woman say that you know you love someone when you are ready to spend the rest of your life making them happy. We can also apply this to loving the Lord God and His Son, Jesus Christ. Nothing pleases the Lord more than us keeping His commandments.

This is what Jesus said in John 14:15: "If ye love me, keep my commandments."

Are you ready to devote the rest of your life to pleasing the Lord?

Thought for the Day

Who can understand his errors? cleanse thou me from secret faults. Keep back thy servant also from presumptuous sins; let them not have dominion over me: then shall I be upright, and I shall be innocent from the great transgression. Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O LORD, my strength, and my redeemer. Psalm 19:12-14


Psalm 51:1-13
1 Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy lovingkindness: according unto the multitude of thy tender mercies blot out my transgressions.

Thought for the Day

Hebrews 13:5 Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.



1Timothy 6:8 And having food and raiment let us be therewith content.


Philippians 4:11 Not that I speak in respect of want: for I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content.


1Timothy 6:6 But godliness with contentment is great gain.

Are you content with what you have, or are you continuously scrabbling to get more? More money, more clothes, more shoes, more than your friends and neighbors. More house, more land, more car. Let's pray and ask the Lord to help us to be content with what He has given us.

Forgiveness

Jesus had a few things to say about forgiveness. In Matthew 5:23-24, He said, “Therefore if thou bring thy gift to the altar, and there rememberest that thy brother hath ought against thee; Leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way; first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift.” If you are reconciled to someone, it appears that someone had to forgive the other, right? (By the way, “Ought” means “anything”.)

Jesus also said this in Mark 11:25-26, “And when ye stand praying, forgive, if ye have ought against any: that your Father also which is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses. But if ye do not forgive, neither will your Father which is in heaven forgive your trespasses.” That’s serious. If God our Father doesn’t forgive our trespasses, we can’t go to Heaven!

See what Jesus told the Apostle Peter: “Then came Peter to him, and said, Lord, how oft shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? till seven times? Jesus saith unto him, I say not unto thee, Until seven times: but, Until seventy times seven.” Matthew 18:21-22.

Do you know what keeps us from forgiving others? Usually, it’s pride. Our pride says, “He wounded me, and I won’t forget it!” Unfortunately, pride is on the list of things God hates. Proverbs 6:16-19; Proverbs 8:13.

When we don’t forgive, we become bitter, and bitterness is not pleasing to God. “Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice: And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you.” Ephesians 4:31-32.

Today, ask the Lord to help you to forgive those who have hurt you. If you know of someone who feels that you have slighted them in some way, ask their forgiveness too.

Thought for the Day

Proverbs 14:1 Every wise woman buildeth her house: but the foolish plucketh it down with her hands.

This does not mean we are all supposed to go get jobs in the construction industry. Neither does it mean that we all get to have a house built to our specifications!

It means that if we are wise, we will contribute to the stability of our homes. Our husbands, if we're married, will be able to trust us and depend on us to carry our share of the load. We will do all in our power to keep our marriages strong. Our homes, whether they be mansions or camper trailers, will be refuges of peace.

But, if we are foolish, we will gripe and complain. We will let the house fall down around our heads, and our husbands will choose to be anywhere but home.

How do we get that wisdom? "The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding." Prov. 9:10.
Then what will happen? "Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the LORD, she shall be praised." Prov. 31:30.

Psalm 34:14-17


14 Depart from evil, and do good; seek peace, and pursue it.
(Why?)
15 The eyes of the LORD are upon the righteous, and his ears are open unto their cry.
16 The face of the LORD is against them that do evil, to cut off the remembrance of them from the earth.
(Praise God!)
17 The righteous cry, and the LORD heareth, and delivereth them out of all their troubles.
(If He didn't, we would have no hope!)


As the Apostle Paul said in Romans 8:31, "What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us?"
